This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy. Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian -- leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle.
But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules. Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it. Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glokta a whole lot more difficult.
Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood. Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos. The world had changed even before I discovered the foreign ship wrecked on the shore below Crydee Castle, but it was the harbinger of the chaos and death that was coming to our door. These are the first three books to the Emperor's Edge series, and I have to say they are amazing!
I really enjoyed them. Here's the positive: -Great characters - the characters all have depth and are well developed. Before long you will fall in love with our misfit band of outlaws. Their emotions are vividly brought to life, and I found them completely realistic. There is a touch of mystery to every book feeding the overarching plot line that spans the entire series. The plot of each individual book is engaging -Humour - Certain characters are hilarious, their comments and banter will keep you laughing!
In this world, despite the rapidly advancing technology we are still in the world of steam engines and robots -Fighting - and lots of it, one of the main characters is a former assassin, and the plot takes place in a war-oriented empire. The negatives: I really can't think about anything that bothered me throughout these books. There is some mature content later on in the series between politics, bloodbaths, and romance what do you expect , nothing too bad, but I wouldn't recommend to children. Of course, I have been told that I am very conservative in such matters. I would recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of steampunk, adventure and humour.
A great read! Very interesting and refreshing story. I have been a fan of SteamPunk art for a long time, never before these books, have I read any SteamPunk books. This is also my first book where a women is the leading and heroine character but even so, these books do not feel overly romantic or girlish at all. All my pre-concepted paradigms and stereotypes have been chattered. I would recommend this book 10 out 10 to anyone interested in sci-fi, mystery, detective or action with a twist of victorian technology In other word everything that is SteamPunk.
Thank you very much Lindsay Buroker for a refreshing and exciting series. I look foward to more of you books and stories! A generally fast-paced yarn with lots of clever wit. Very enjoyable. Was hoping for a resolution, but will now have to read the sequels. I'll have to buy the 4th book and beyond, given how much I enjoyed this trilogy.
Written with a sense of humour, the characters come to life and make the story, though there's nothing wrong with the section. I think this would make a great movie or series. I'd watch :- … Show more Show less. I want to have selective amnesia so that I can go back and read these books again for the first time.
